A Message from Shuvendu Sen, MD, MS - President of Harnett County Medical and Dental Society
In a world challenged as never before with rising poverty and crumbling finances, suffering has become a universal outcome of both disease and poverty. No time is more apt than now for providers to rise to an occasion, desperate in need. This is a call that must not be denied. While health reforms are promised, sweeping improvements in the instant future will be an unrealistic concept.
Yet hope comes from confidence Americans have on their providers. A recent Gallup Poll released this week, found that nearly 73% Americans believe doctors will recommend the right thing for reforming the US Health care system. In our own backyard, the HIT Strategic Planning Task Force has submitted to the Governor the final draft of the strategic plan “for improving Health and Healthcare in North Carolina by Leveraging Federal Health IT Stimulus Funds."
Harnett County, much like other Counties of the State, lies at the crossroad of a similar dichotomy, a firm commitment amidst an emerging challenge. To us, members of the Society, pride lies in our ability to reach out to our community, medically, culturally, and intellectually.
For me it is an honor and privilege to serve as President of the Harnett County Medical and Dental Society. Our Society stands on a long lineage of providers of excellence and repute. It is a matter of great and personal delight to me to witness the Society grows in stature and responsibility. Here's a snapshot of what we have achieved or endeavor to in the future.
With moral and intellectual support from Wake County Medical Society, Johnston Medical Society and Care Share Health Alliance we are in the process of implementing Project Access in our County to meet the health needs of Harnett County residents who have no insurance, and income below stipulated poverty guideline.
In alliance with Rotary Club, Harnett County Medical and Dental Society will be organizing an annual Health Fair to impart care and awareness amongst its County residents.
As a tribute to those who had served and contributed immensely to our Community and in the field of Medicine, we have opened an Emeritus Chapter to highlight and recognize their contribution and accomplishments.
In our efforts to reach out to our younger population our Society in the Student of Excellence section, endeavors to recognize students of highest merit and medical bent of mind, from two major schools of our County.
We are proud to bring out our Online Journal, a reflection of incredible intellectual and scientific depth amongst our County providers.
At the crossroad of a great ancestry and a greater future, Harnett County Medical and Dental Society, looks forward for support and endorsement from its fellow physicians and providers. To our community we have a responsibility. To our colleagues, we have a commitment. Yet none can be achieved without those who believe in themselves and have the courage to change things. I would end with George Bernard Shaw:
“You see things as they are and ask, "Why?" I dream things as they never were and ask, "Why not?"
